Our long-serving and much-respected Chief Engineer, Bill Williams, passed away last night after a battle with cancer.
Bill, who recently became WALB-TV's Director of Engineering, worked here at our station for 44 years.
His passion for his job and his knowledge of engineering are the reason all of you have been able to watch us all these years.
He led the station's recovery from a 1976 fire; his ingenuity helped us continue broadcasting during the flood of 1994; his leadership transitioned us from analog to digital. And finally into High Definition News which we launched just last Saturday.
Bill was always behind the scenes to make sure we were the best we could be; he knew you, our viewers, deserved that.
Bill was a smart and kind man who loved photography.
He photographed the Olympic Torch run through Albany in 1996.
Bill also loved cars and most of all, he loved his family.
He is survived by his wife Shirley, daughters Wendy and Melissa and his son, Chris and his granddaughter, Sierra.
Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
Bill will be missed.
Visitation is Thursday night from 6 - 8 pm at Mathews Funeral Home in Albany.
His funeral is Friday at one p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home, followed by interment at Cool Springs Baptist Church in Sale City.
