Commissioners discuss site selection survey for transit center

Posted: Updated:

Albany city commissioners are a little closer to deciding where a new transit center should be located.

Tuesday, the board voted 4 to 2 in a preliminary decision to spend $275,000 on a site selection survey.

Commissioners against the survey say it's waste of money.

Others believe they have no choice if they want to get money from the Federal Transportation Administration for the project.

"Do I think that it's necessary for us to go out and do another study? Personally I don't, but if you're going to use federal funds you have to do what they say do and they have said we need to do another study before we pick another specific site," said Commissioner Christopher Pike.

The city spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on an archaeological survey at the initial proposed site on Roosevelt Avenue.  But some leaders don't want to move the transportation hub that far away from the current bus station site.

Commissioners hope this new study will bring new ideas to the table.
