VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Valdosta State University's new president says the university must continue to look for more private money as the state continues to cut public funding.

Dr. William McKinney addressed the community for the first time today at the school's annual fall convocation.

He says the university now functions more like a private university with more than half of operating dollars coming from tuition fees, and private money.

He says VSU will become more innovative, starting with technology.

"A lot of competition now in higher education is making great use of digital technology. We need to be the innovators and we will, we've got incredibly smart people here and our goal is to become that model of how higher education gets done in this part of the 21st century and beyond," said McKinney.

President McKinney says to be a university of the future, VSU has to become more mobile and digital through networking and technology.
