MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -
A prank making the rounds in Colquitt County is worrying some people and keeping court officials busy explaining it's not real.
Apparently, people wanting to play a joke on their friends are telling them they need to call a certain phone number.
They get a recording telling them they missed jury duty and now face a big fine or jail time. We got the clerk of courts office to call the number for us Monday.
A portion of the call says: "Failing to appear in court for jury duty is a class three misdemeanor. To make arrangements to pay the $500 fine for failure to appear for jury duty, press two. To make arrangements to begin serving a 30 day prison sentence for failure to appear for jury duty, press three."
"It is just a prank if you listen to it to the end, said Colquitt Co. Chief Deputy Clerk Lynn Purvis. "But, unfortunately, in the beginning of it, it sounds legit. Folks, when they listen to it, they just flip out and hang up before they listen to it all the way through."
The hotline is run by humorhotlines.com. We spoke with them Monday afternoon. They say it is only a joke. They do not call anyone. You have to call into the hotline.
They've gotten almost three million calls for the jury duty prank line. They have hundreds of other prank hotlines.
