School starts Monday in Dougherty County and Friday South Albany community groups came together today to give school supplies to kids in need.

Several groups including the neighborhood watch to the Albany Hawks recreation basketball program handed out Friday at the Henderson Gym.

The students had to be accompanied by a parent, and were able to show a need.

They received donations like school uniforms, notebooks, back packs, papers and writing instruments. Educators say those are crucial for lower income students in need.

"When they start out right, they'll probably end up right. If they don't have what they need when they start, they don't want to come because they feel embarrassed with the other students, by not having those things," said Tommie Postell, Albany City Commissioner.

This is the second school supply give away that community advocate Willie Ross and his South Albany group have donated to this week, all trying to make sure students in need are well prepared for their education.
