MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -

One year after a former Darton women's soccer player died in a car accident, her family has started a charity in her memory.

Sha Wetherington died in a single car crash in Brooks County on the way to a job interview last June. Since her death, Sha's family has started a charity called SHA Missions.

SHA stands for Sharing Hope Around. And that is just what they are doing, giving people who are struck with tragedy in their lives, hope.

'Gone too soon,' are the words used to describe Sha Wetherington.

"Sha was a special person with the gift of giving, she had a beautiful smile that just lit up the room, so when she passed, we wanted to continue doing something in her honor,"  said Sha's Mom, Jeanine Wetherington.

The night before her car crash, Sha and her mother discussed her future plans, since she had just graduated Georgia Southern that Spring.

"She decided she was going to go do some mission work, she didn't get the opportunity to do that, so we decided to fulfill that mission for her," said Ms. Wetherington.

In Belize, the family realized they wanted to do more work, so they formed SHA Missions.

"You cant take the tragedy and let it consume you, and think, poor old me, since our tragedy we have seen that there is hurt everywhere," said Ms. Wetherington.

Her mom says Sha lived to help her fellow man and they want to continue her special gift of sharing hope to all those she encountered.

That is why the organization is hosting "A Race to Remember."

It gives runners the opportunity to remember someone special they have lost, while raising money for the organization to continue sharing hope.

  • SHA Missions is working on starting a scholarship for a high school or college student who want to do missionary work for the first time.
