TIFT CO., GA (WALB) -

When you think of tropical fruits, bananas are probably one of the first things that comes to your mind.

But bananas are a surprisingly hardy fruit.  They can grow in areas that you might not think of as tropical - including here in South Georgia.

At Ty Ty Nursery, dozens of banana trees are on display, along with palm trees.

The fruit produced by the trees is a sweet, edible variety.  The palm trees can also grow in Georgia and actually able to resist sub-zero temperatures.

But if you do decide to plant trees like palms or bananas, you'll still need to protect them from the cold.

Ryan Phillips of Ty Ty Nursery said, "if you have a banana plant, they are cold hardy and you can leave them out in the yard. What you'll do is cut them up to about a foot and then you would want to mulch them, to insulate them during the winter time."

Phillips says that if it's drought resistance that you're looking for, the palm trees are a possibility, but that the banana trees do need some water.
