The governor says he's going back to the drawing board to figure out what to do about Georgia transportation.
Georgians rejected the Transportation Sales Tax referendum in nine of 12 regions.
It only passed in the River Valley Region, which includes Sumter, Crisp, Dooly, Stewart, Quitman, Randolph, and Clay counties as well in the Savannah and Macon regions.
Chamber officials say the infrastructure improvements are needed to spur Georgia's economy.
"Without a proper transportation system there is no way a manufacturer or distribution company can get their finished goods to market. So economic developers worldwide know and understand that. So the chamber, even though we were set back a little bit yesterday, we'll continue those efforts," said Winston Oxford, Lee County Chamber President.
Critics derided the T- SPLOST tax proposal as an unfair tax on the poor that wouldn't solve sprawl.
Chamber officials say improvements to Georgia's transportation have to be made to draw new businesses and jobs and legislators have to come up with ways to fund those projects.
