TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

The plan to add an extra 1% sales tax to pay for highway improvement failed miserably across the state. The measure is losing in southwest Georgia.

It also failed in the Southern Georgia District. The Governor and Chambers of commerce had hoped Voters would approve the tax increase.

It is passing in only 3 of the 12 Districts voting Tuesday. One of the three districts where it is passing so far is the River Valley District which includes Sumter and Crisp and other counties to the north.

"You will see a difference in South Georgia in roads," said T-SPLOST committee member and re-election Tift County Commission Chairman Grady Thompson. "We may have to regroup, put something else together, and try it again."

He says the committee could change their plan and try to return it to the ballot for voters in future years.
