DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -
Investigators are warning South Georgia stores to be on guard for a group of men working together cashing counterfeit checks. They recently cheated a Dougherty County Convenience store out of $800. And it was all caught on surveillance video.
Take a look at these men. On July 18th about 5:30 P.M. this man came into the Quick Buys on Sylvester with a payroll check from Southern Express Freight, for the amount of $396. The store was very busy, and the clerk cashed it without checking ID. An hour later this man came in with basically the same phony check, just with a different name on it. The check number and routing number and everything on it was the same except the name.
The clerk again cashed it. They found out that night the checks were phony. The next day, July 19th, this man came into the store with the same check, with a third name on it. The clerk tried to keep the man in the store, but he grabbed his check and left. Dougherty County Police say this appears to be a ring hiring people to cash the phony checks.
Dougherty County Police Sgt. Chad Kirkpatrick said "They came up with the information and changed the person's name to give to different individuals."
If you can identify those men, you could earn a reward. Call CRIMESTOPPERS at 436-TIPS, and you can stay anonymous. Dougherty County Police are warning stores to be on the lookout for these phony checks.
