ASU quarterback battle set to begin

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

It will be a two horse race at the quarterback position as the Albany State football team is set to report next week in preparation for fall practices.  ASU is having to replace two time conference player of the year Stanley Jennings for next season.

So who will start at QB? First you have Keenan Grissett.  The junior transfer from Garner Webb played well in the ASU spring game.  After being a quarterback in high school Grissett has spent most of college career on defense and special teams.

The other contender will be Rodney Castlin, who played for the Rams as a freshman but spent last season at a JUCO in Arizona.  Both quarterbacks are more athletes than passers and it's sure to be a different dynamic than when Stanley Jennings last was at the helm last year.

Offensive coordinator Uyl Joyner said  "Stanley was a passer that could run. These guys are runners that really can pass so that will be the big change that you will see. There will be more quarterback runs for these guys. Stanley, it's going to be hard to replace him. He's the two time player of the year in our conference so I cannot put that type of push on them to replace him. Right now, we're just to feel it out and let these guys go into camp on a even playing field so everybody gets a fair shot at the position and come out of camp with a starter."

The ASU players return to school next week with the first practice set for August 6th.
