UPDATE: Late night fire blamed on hot iron

Posted: Updated:

A hot iron that fell onto a bed is the cause of a late night fire that left a family displaced. That's the determination by AFD investigator Sam Harris.

The Albany Fire Department was dispatched to the West Wind Apartment Complex, 2415 Dawson Road, around 10:45 Thursday night.

Fire officials say when they arrived on scene, Apartment R8 was engulfed in heavy flames and smoke. The apartment directly below R8 had lots of water damage.

Five family members who live in that apartment made it out safely with no injuries. It took less than 15 minutes for firefighters to have the flames under control.

The Family could not return to their apartment due to heavy damage. The American Red Cross put them in a hotel for the night.
