VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -
Four would be burglars took off last night when the alarm sounded at Robinson Recycling, and then led deputies on a chase. The getaway car crashed, one of them was caught, but the search continues for the other three.
Robinson Recycling on Howell Road is surrounded by other businesses, and a church where the pastor is worried.
"We're going to heighten our safety at the church and warn our members as well," said Pastor William Morgan.
Around 1:30 this morning an alarm sounded at Robinson when four men tried to break in.
As they sped away they crashed into a vacant building, jumped out and ran, but one of them was quickly caught.
"One of our K-9 units happened to be responding also, and was right around the corner. He deployed his K-9 and tracked down Mr. Taylor Bell about a little less than a half mile from where they originally fled from."
The attempted break-in happened across the street from Morning Star Baptist Church.
Pastor William Morgan says this is the first attempted burglary he's heard of since the opening of this church on Morven Road three years ago.
"There's an increase in the number of crimes being committed.. Serious crimes too, and we can't help but equate it with the unemployment crisis were are facing," said Morgan.
Investigators say the men may have wanted to steal the copper in the junkyard but since they tired to break into the office, there's a big chance they just wanted cash.
Taylor Bell is charged with burglary and is in Lowndes County jail. Investigators say they hope this arrest will lead them to his co-horts.
