A busy downtown Albany intersection is getting a new look with a safety upgrade.

Workers are installing railroad crossing gates at North Jefferson Street and West Roosevelt Avenue. They're also widening intersection and putting in concrete barriers.

Construction work is already underway.

You need to be cautious and prepare for detours if you drive through the area while the work is going on.

City officials say the gates are needed.

"People have been talking about this for years with many others, but this is clearly the one that is the worse with the most traffic. There will be some occasional traffic delays and possible detours, so those coming our way, watch out for it. I think it'll be a great improvement," said Assistant City Manager Wes Smith.

The contract with Oxford Construction says the work must be finished by the end of the year.
