City of Albany commissioners approve property tax increase

Posted: Updated:

There will be a tax increase for Albany property owners.

You'll notice it when you get your property tax bill later this year.

City Commissioners voted five to two to raise the rate from 8.66 mils to 9.99 mils.

One commissioner said it was a tough decision either to raise property taxes or sacrifice public safety.

"Unfortunately, being able to provide those services costs us more money. Therefore, we have to figure out how do we generate more money to pay for the increase in those services," said Ward 3 Commissioner Christopher Pike.

The tax hike means if you own a $100,000 home, the city portion of your tax bill will go up $53 a year.
