SPENCER COUNTY, KY (WAVE)- Federal officials are calling a drug bust "pretty impressive." In fact, they said it was one of the Drug Enforcement Administration's largest drug ring busts the agency is aware of in recent history.

Though the actual bust happened a while ago, neighbors in the Spencer County community where the suspected drug ring leader lives are still talking about it. It was someone neighbors Neil and Gerri McClain never expected.

"It just blows you away when you do find out somebody like that lives across the street from you," Neil McClain said.

The DEA said Michael McCarthy Jr. led a drug ring that distributed more than a ton of cocaine from 2008 to 2010.

"We've never seen him," said Neil's wife, Gerrie McClain. "We've seen his wife out. The kids out playing."

Authorities said that operation sold 100 kilograms of cocaine for $30,000 each, a month. Records said the ring included using semi's to move cocaine from California to Kentucky. In all, 26 people were indicted.

"You see stuff in the movies like this," Neil said, "But you never think about it would happen here in Kentucky."

According to Spencer County's Property Valuation Administrator, a man named Michael McCarthy owns a home in a Spencer County subdivision valued at $353,000. WAVE 3 went to the home, but we were asked to leave.

Authorities said McCarthy lives a low-key lifestyle. The nationwide scope of an investigation, according to a DEA official, included the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Tobacco alcohol and firearms and Louisville Metro Police. Investigators broke the ring on April 6th, 2010 after surveillance at McCarthy's parents home in Louisville where he was arrested.

"We didn't find out that he was involved in drugs until 6 to 8 months to a year after they bought the home," Neil McClain said, "Then we heard the DEA arrested him and there was a lot of people out here in black SUV's looking around."

Charges have been brought against at least half a dozen people including McCarthy. Some of them entered guilty pleas. An ATF agent tells WAVE 3 this is an ongoing investigation.
