LOWNDES COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

In Lowndes County, one of the most important races is for sheriff. Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine is urging voters to support his re-election campaign.

Prine says the one thing that gets in the way of running for sheriff is being the sheriff.

"What makes it hard this time as opposed to last time is, I have to be here," said Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine. "And the only time I have to campaign is at night and on the weekends."

Prine has been the sheriff of Lowndes County for the last four years. He says his biggest achievement has been keeping the citizens safe.

"Even though the economy is as low as it is, our crime rate is down," said Prine. "We're down on burglaries, rapes, murders. And I'm very thankful for that."

Prine attributes most of his success to his employees. "The most rewarding thing for me is the folks I have working here," said Prine. "I give them credit for the success we've had. I've got a good bunch of folks working here and I'm thankful for the that. I'm just a cheerleader."

Prine says even with the low crime rates, he still has a lot more work to do. "One of my campaign promises was to get law enforcement officers in the school system. Our S.R.O. Program," said Prine.

Prine plans to spend the rest of the week on the road speaking to anyone who is willing to listen.

Former Lowndes County deputy and current realtor J. D. Yeager is running against Prine.
