A new face will hang among a gallery of distinguished judges in the Dougherty County Courthouse.

A portrait of Georgia Court of Appeals Presiding Judge Herbert Phipps was unveiled Monday.  He's the first African American judge so honored at the courthouse.

Family and friends packed the courthouse to show their support during this historic moment.  Judge Phipps said it symbolizes progress in Dougherty County.

"You know we still have a lot of work to do, but often its important to just pause for a minute and reflect on how far we've come.  And I think that's what this day does.  It shows us how far we have come even though we still have a lot of work to do," explained Phipps.

Judge Phipps became the first African American Superior Court judge in Dougherty County in 1995.  He joined the Court of Appeals in 1999.
