PELHAM, GA -
It was 1:30 Wednesday morning when a Pelham Police officer saw headlights fast approaching on U.S. 19.
The officer's dashboard camera was rolling when a Chevy Camaro SS sped by at 136 miles an hour in a 45 mile per hour zone.
"I've been hear 19 years and I've seen high-speed chases with speeders well in excess of 100 miles an hour. But I believe this is the first I've heard of one on radar being clocked on radar at 136 miles per hour," said Pelham Police Investigator Rod Williams.
The driver of the car, police say is 20-year-old Andrew Bacon. We featured him in 2010 in a story about winning the Camaro through a contest.
In the dashcam video, you can barely see the headlights in the distance as the officer gives chase. But the Camaro was going so fast, he couldn't catch up.
"He used the police radio to notify 911 to let them know this vehicle was headed toward the city of Camilla," said Williams.
Bacon raced into Camilla maintaining triple digit speeds. He flew past the officers there outrunning their patrol cars. He eventually ran out of gas on US 19 in Baconton.
"He was a danger to himself and anybody on the roadway. It was 1:30 in the morning and you can see from the video there still was light traffic on the roadway," Williams said.
A deputy found Bacon outside the car in a ditch.
Bacon is charged with DUI, speeding, reckless driving, fleeing, and under age consumption.
Last year a wrong way driver was killed as he sped on US 19 in Pelham.
A woman and her child were injured when he crashed into their car.
Incidents like these have Pelham Police increasing their speeding enforcement.
