Midwest drought affects Georgia crops

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

You may soon pay more at the grocery store because of the historic drought hitting much of the country especially the Midwest.

More than three-fourths of the nation's corn and soybeans are withering in the drought. Those crops are used in many food products and in feed for livestock. The increased costs will eventually be passed on to consumers.

"For dairy, beef and poultry, which are so important. When you have those elements of that poultry diet which is important to Georgia. When they are raised, it raises the cost to feed, which will in turn result in an elevated price for the consumer product." said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black.

Commissioner Black says Georgia farmers who planted corn and soybean this year are producing good crops and should be able to make good money because of the high demand.
