Dougherty Co. Sheriff's Office offers free gun locks

Posted: Updated:

The Dougherty County Sheriff's Office is providing free gun locks to gun owner.

Deputies demonstrated how the lock works and renders the gun inoperable.

A recent study by the Legal Community Against Violence Group found more than 75% of guns used in youth suicide attempts and unintentional injuries were stored in the home of the victim, a relative or friend.

Sheriff's officials say gun owners must be responsible for their firearms.

"The responsibility for the safe storage of a firearm ultimately rests with the owner of that firearm. This is a good way for the person that has a firearm in their home can store it in a locked mode where even if the firearm is discovered by a child or anybody else, it's rendered inoperable," said Col. John Ostrander, Dougherty County Sheriff's Office.

If you want to pick up a lock go to the Dougherty County jail and ask for one.
