Whooping cough cases on the rise in Georgia

Posted: Updated:

The number of dangerous Whooping Cough cases are on the rise in Georgia.  Five people in Newton County were recently diagnosed, and a doctor at a children's hospital in Atlanta says they're seeing twice the number of cases as last year.

It's highly contagious and spread through respiratory droplets.

Infants are most at risk. That's why its important to have infants immunized. Those who live or work with babies need to a booster shot.

Pertussis can lead to pneumonia and even death.

"They cough so much that they cant inhale their breath so you get that gasp or that whooping sound so it is a special cough especially for infants less than a year old," said  Jacqueline Jenkins, Public Health Epidemiologist.

There's only been one case in the southwest health district this year.
