Forums to inform Sumter residents of T-SPLOST initiative

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Georgians will vote on a regional transportation sales tax in a couple of weeks. But a lot of people admit they really don't know a lot about the proposal.

A forum is going on in Leslie Tuesday night to explain how the money will be used.

For Sumter County, it would mean widening South Georgia Tech parkway, Middle River Road and Highway 280 from Crisp County to Highway 300.

The money in that area earned from the transportation sales tax would benefit the Flint River Valley which stretches from Crisp County to Columbus.

"I think just in the River Valley the number of jobs that they're hoping to create over the next 10 years would be about 16,000 in construction. So that would be a fantastic boost to our economy throughout the region," said Americus Sumter Chamber Chairman Lewis Webb.

The meeting will be held Leslie Civic Center . Another forum will take place next week in Andersonville.
