AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -
Americus police are dealing with a growing problem of people breaking into cars.
The police chief there says he needs help from Americus citizens to stop the burglaries. He says one simple change will make police officers' lives much easier.
It is a simple day for all of these drivers. But, Americus police say they must protect themselves if they don't want to become victims.
"We experienced 14 car break-ins in one evening and three stolen cars," said Americus Police Chief Mark Gerbino.
It is a problem they have seen in the last week and a half. All of cars were unlocked. The stolen ones were an easy target.
It is one thing to leave your car unlocked and fall victim to burglars that way. But, Americus police say they have seen people who have left their keys in the ignition of that car, and the car gets stolen.
The nonchalant attitude about safety and comfort is good and bad according to Americus police.
"I consider that a testament to what a wonderful place Americus is," said Chief Gerbino. "The thinking is a little unrealistic. But, we have got a great city here. It is just that we have to change with the times. That's all."
They are still working some of the cases along with a rash of home burglaries. He says the economy plays a role. They have arrested a group of five men.
"They were young guys," said Chief Gerbino. "When they were questioned as to what the motivation was, the answer was so we could get our drinking money and our money for pot."
He says none of them had jobs. The Chief says there are many things you can do to prevent yourself from being a victim.
"This is what happens when you contribute to the environment for criminals to commit crimes," Chief Gerbino said. "Lock your vehicles. Check your home for security. Don't leave your keys in your vehicles."
He calls them opportunity crimes. Don't give criminals an opportunity to take your belongings, and they won't.
Chief Gerbino says if you come up on a burglary in progress, call 911 and do not confront the burglars. He says officers have caught some of them with stolen handguns from the cars.
