Southwest Georgia Public Health officials have confirmed the first known case of West Nile Virus in our area this summer.

Officials say a patient at a Dougherty County hospital has the virus which is transmitted through mosquitos.

Those most susceptible to contracting West Nile include the very young, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.

It's wise to use repellant, especially at dusk and dawn when mosquitos are prevalent.

It's also recommended to empty any standing water that could serve as a breeding ground for mosquitos.

There is no vaccine for West Nile Virus and it can be deadly.
