Indicted Dougherty County School Board member Velvet Riggins is now temporarily out of office.

Thursday afternoon, Governor Nathan Deal suspended Riggins from office. She was indicted in April on four charges and accused of providing false information to obtain free school meals for her child.

Board member Carol Tharin told us she's relieved the board can now move forward. And school system attorney Tommy Coleman explained why the Governor made the decision to suspend Riggins.

Tharin says, "Well I think this is something that we have been waiting to hear for quite some time. I feel like it is a step in the right direction to move on with the process."

Tommy Coleman says, "If the charge is related to their position duties as an elected official then they can be removed temporarily."

Governor Deal said he will not fill Riggins empty seat. She will remain suspended until the outcome of her case. If she's found innocent, she'll return to the board.

If she's convicted of a felony she will not. Riggins is currently running for re-election, unopposed.
