ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A place where generations of south Georgians have gone for fun and recreation is now shut down... but it could reopen soon.

The AMF Bowl-A-Rama in the 1200 block of West Broad Avenue closed Tuesday.

AMF officials could not tell us me how long they operated the bowling alley, but some veteran bowlers said they competed there in the 60's.

AMF officials say the sales performance at the Albany location led them to make the tough decision to close.

Jerome Benning said he was devastated when he took his kids there this Wednesday morning.

"They wanted to go bowling today. So I said I'm going to take them bowling today.  And when I got there the bowling alley was locked.  So my son knocked on the door, and the man came to the door and said they closed down," said Jerome Benning, Disappointed Bowler.

AMF officials said 12 to 15 employees lost their jobs with the Bowl-A-Rama's closing.

Bob Brooks owns the building.

He says he is buying all the bowling equipment and getting a business license and will re-open it as an independent bowling alley as soon as possible.
