A new study shows in the 2011 fiscal year, the University System of Georgia had a $13.2 billion impact on Georgia's economy. That's up 5% from the year before. And the system generated nearly 132,000 jobs.

In our area, Valdosta State University's impact is $340 million and more than 4000 jobs.

Albany State had a $148 million dollar impact and helped create nearly 1800 jobs.

Darton College's impact is more than $119 million and 1500 jobs.

Only one of the state's 2-year colleges has a greater impact on its local economy than Darton, and that's the massive Georgia Perimeter in Atlanta.

We couldn't get Darton officials to talk to us about that impact Tuesday, but one student told us he's proud of how important the college is to our area. Trandez Sims said, "It definitely sends a positive vibe to us. I love Darton. It really brightens my day to come out here. It just makes me feel good to come to a school that is known, you know, is known for good things."

The study found that for every job a school creates on-campus, it creates two off-campus in spending related to the institution.

Statewide, on-campus jobs increased only slightly, but higher spending by a growing number of students boosted off-campus jobs related to the university system by 41%.
