THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - A south Georgia man who served his city for 26-years is now getting some needed help from the people he worked with.

Firefighter Tommy Benton was recently diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's.

To assist him and his family with treatment and travel costs, fellow public servants organized the Tommy Benton Chicken Dinner.

"Tommy is probably one of the best men I've ever come across. He's been a firefighter for the city of Thomasville for almost 26 years. A very, very, very good friend. A very, very good guy, all around good guy," said Thomasville Police Lt. Wade Glover.

The dinner is this Thursday from 5pm to 7pm at the Thomasville Operations Building.

Tickets are $7 a plate and all proceeds benefit the Tommy Benton Fund.
