Mayor Dorothy Hubbard climbed aboard an Oxford Construction excavator, and demolished the first bricks of the Heritage House this morning.

City leaders gathered at the site for the first time since the removal process began.

It took Oxford Construction crews several weeks to get rid of the asbestos in the building.

Mayor Hubbard wanted to get inside the machine to ceremonially remove the first bricks.

She believes this is a win for the city. "I'm going to hit the first brick for the people. I'm really excited. It's taken us a long time. I have worked at this for years as a city commissioner."

City leaders hope to have the site clear within a month. Oxford Construction crews will turn over the property back to the city on October 15th.
