A major food hub and farming school could be coming to Albany.

"The Southwest Georgia Project for Community Education" told Dougherty County Commissioners on Monday about a grant that would fund the food processing hub.

It would serve as a processing plant for local growers and the food would be sold to area stores and schools.

"What that means for Albany is more economic development. We will be bringing in people to purchase those fruits and vegetables.  There's also a retail sit that will be there at the hub. So we're really excited," said Harriet Hollis, the Grants Project Coordinator.

The proposed location is the old farmers market at the corner of Oakridge Drive and Gaines Avenue.

The food hub would serve 14 Southwest Georgia counties.  The goal would be to produce 800 pounds of food per hour.

The group is requesting a letter of support from the county.  They'll find out by the end of September if they'll get the grant.
