32 arrested in Colquitt Co. cock fighting bust

COLQUITT CO., GA (WALB) -

32 people were arrested Saturday when the Colquitt County Sheriff's office busted a cock fighting ring.

Law enforcement, animal control, and the humane society was on scene when it all went down.

Beyond a gate and down the dirt road of  private property was where deputies busted a group of thirty two people for cock fighting.

"The Lowndes County sheriff's office assisted us with the search warrant," said Shannon Hart, chief investigator at the Colquitt County Sheriff's Office. "At this time, there was a total of thirty two individuals arrested. They are charged with party to the crime to cruelty to animals."

Animal control and the humane's society were also on scene to assist law enforcement. It happened just north of Norman Park.

"At 11:30 AM, we served a search warrant on Georgia Highway 256," Hart said. "It was the property of Wallace Hurst."

So what charges go along with cruelty to animals?

"That particular charge is a misdemeanor." Hart said.  "The owner of the property will be facing additional charges which will be felonies."

Authorities towed a truck and a four wheeler from the scene. They also brought out chicken crates from the private property.

"We've been doing the investigation for probably about a month now," Hart said.

30 men and two women are in the process of being booked into the Colquitt County jail.

Law enforcement started making arrests Saturday morning in connection to the cock fighting. They did not finish until the late afternoon.  The names and mug shots are not available yet.
