Demolition crews are now taking down the main part of the old Heritage House Hotel on West Oglethorpe Boulevard, known as Albany's worst eyesore. It sat empty for nearly 20 years, and the city spent several years battling in court for the right to tear it down.
Oxford Construction crews are now knocking down the western section of the facility after spending weeks getting rid of asbestos. They'll start on the eastern side next week.
The old ballroom and some houses that were on the property are already down.
The folks at Green Light Auto Sales next door have been watching the work and are glad it's gotten to this point. Manager T.J. Hummingbird said, "I'm just glad to see that progress is being made. It's always good to see something progress in a positive direction. I guess you could say if you're not going forward, you're going backwards, you know, there's no sitting still. So if it's just sitting there, it's going backwards, so we're glad something's finally getting done."
Oxford Construction hopes to have the entire structure down by the end of this month and the whole site cleared by the end of August. They say they'll be able to recycle 80% of the material to keep it out of the landfill.
