LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

A fire that caused low visibility on US 19 in northern Lee County is still smoldering Friday night.

Yesterday afternoon fire crews battled the fire near Eagle Pond Road between Leesburg and Smithville.

Officials say lightning struck dry brush and started the fire 71-acres burned.

Georgia Forestry officials used tractors to clear fire breaks and contained the blaze.

"We have monitored it and had air patrol a few minutes ago checking and everything is secure and we will keep monitoring it for several days," said Herbert Lindsey, Georgia Forestry Commission.

Officials say you should still use caution when traveling this road especially at night. Parts of the woods are still smoldering. Producing smoke that could lower visibility.
