Heritage House soon to be rubble

Posted: Updated:

After years of the dubious distinction of Albany biggest eyesore, and years of litigation, the once grand Heritage House Hotel is being knocked down by heavy equipment.

Crews from Oxford Construction have already removed several houses from the old Heritage House Hotel property on Oglethorpe Boulevard and got rid of asbestos from the main building.

Oxford bought the property. Once demolition and clean up are finished, the city will pay Oxford $1.1 million for the work and the property. The city will then be able to sell it.

If this deal hadn't worked out, the previous owner could have kept the property, and the city still would have been stuck with the full cleanup bill.

Assistant City Manager Wes Smith said it's also a good deal for Oxford, a local company he says stepped up to work with the city. The project is putting Oxford crews to work, and the company is able to make some money by recycling much of the material from the site.

The whole demolition project should be finished by late September.
