Albany Technical College is holding its first Summer Robotics camp after receiving a $2.4 million grant from the Department of Education. The camp is designed to encourage minority and female students to pursue a career in Engineering Technology.
The ten-week program allows high school juniors and seniors to build robots and work on problem solving using their hands and minds.
"The majority of the students came into the program with little or no exposure to Robots," said Michelle Lilly, SASET Program Director at Albany Technical College. "And now they are working collaboratively in teams building a VEX Robot with components they are seeing for the first time. We are really proud of the students' focus and a willingness to think outside the box."
The summer camp is partnered with the Joint Enrollment Program and SASET (Students Achieving Success in Engineering Technology) which allows them to receive academic credit free of charge. Organizers for the camp say building teamwork and communication skills helps the students to be better prepared for future jobs.
"But when they go out there and they try to get a job, they need to be able to relay all of this to their employer. When they get that job they need to be able to work in teams. They need to be able to communicate whatever job it is they are assigned to do," said Lilly.
The camps ultimate goal is to continue their success and compete in robotic building competitions.
