LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -
Fire crews are battling a fire in North Lee County near Eagle Pond Road, between Smithville and Leesburg.
There is smoke on the highway which could worsen, after lightning struck dry brush and started a fire.
"The rain that we had Tuesday night Tuesday afternoon was a lightning strike in the pond and it kinda had enough on it," said Brent McCarty, DNR Ranger "It quieted it down for a little while and with the heat from yesterday and today, it's come back to life and we're having to take some suppression tactics on it."
Officials say to use caution when traveling this road at night because the darkness combined with the smoke can lower visibility.
