It was a story book ending for a group who doesn't get paid much nor do they get much fame but they do have heart. The Albany Panthers knocked off Richmond 60-56 to win the PIFL Championship in front of over 6,000 fans at the Civic Center Saturday night.
The game started with Darnell Kennedy finding Antwontis Cutts wide open down the field to give the Panthers the 7-0 lead. Kennedy started in place of the veteran Cecil Lester who was sidelined last week with a sore knee. The Panthers made it 22-6 cashing in on a defensive stop on the one yard line, Kennedy hooked up with a streaking Antwone Savage who had gotten behind the last defender.
Richmond took every shot the Panthers gave them and even managed to tie the game during the middle of the 4th quarter. Head coach Lucious Davis inserted Lester into the line up and Albany took back the lead when Cecil Lester tossed his first touchdown pass of the game giving the Panthers the 7 point lead.
The Panthers defense stepped up big on the next possession when Damian Daniels made a diving interception to give his team back the ball. Lester then found Cutts in the end zone for another Albany score. The Raiders made a final dash at the lead but in the end the Panthers squeezed out the 60-56 win.
