PLAINS, GA (WALB) -

Despite the heat, folks came out for the 4th annual Plains Pig Pickin' barbecue cook-off. More than 20 cooking teams arrived in Plains Friday night, to set up their grills and smokers.

They cooked throughout the night for the Georgia Barbecue Association sanctioned competition. Event organizers say this event serves as a highlight during summertime in Plains.

"What we are trying to do is make different people come to Plains, Georgia and see what's here, see why we love Plains, and maybe come back and stay in our inn, or maybe come back and bring their family, maybe on a different day," says Ruth Sanders, Better Hometown Program Director.

Judges tasted samples from each team and picked best-in-class in four categories, including pork loin, ribs, sauce and butts or shoulders.

Former President Jimmy Carter presented the cook-off awards at 4 o'clock. Jacks New South Barbeque was named the grand champion.
