Trash pick-up late due to vandals

Posted: Updated:

Trash pickup will be late for more than one thousand people in Albany because of vandals.

They smashed the windshields on seven garbage trucks at A-1 Brantley in the East Albany Industrial Park near Mock Road.

It's not only an inconvenience for garbage customers, it's a huge expense to the company.

The owner of A-1 Brantley says he thinks someone took a baseball bat off one of the garbage trucks and went on a smashing spree that's costing him $5,000 to fix. Not to mention the vandals hit on the busiest trash day of the week.

This is what Ulysee James Jr. saw when he pulled into work this morning.

"Why?? Why something so senseless," said Ulysee James, Owner of A-1 Brantley

"There was nothing taken, so I don't see no advantage for what happened here," said Ulysee James.

Seven of his service trucks are out of service because of vandals.

"The windshields were broken on the side the drivers so I guess we couldn't use the trucks today," said Ulysee James.

Many of the vehicles are garbage trucks.

"Really today it almost closed my business down," said Ulysee James.

A-1 Brantley provides trash pickup service to almost 9,000 houses a week and Friday just happens to be the busiest trash day of the week.

"We had to call customers and we also had to call and rent trucks from another company," said Ulysee James.

So now they're running late picking up trash from 1,200 homes.

"We are going to get the route today, we are just going to be a little late," said Ulysee James.

Not only an inconvenience to customers, but its costing the business a lot of money.

"We are looking at $700 each truck," said Ulysee James.

Plus they are having to pay employees overtime.

"I don't see why something like this should have happened," said Ulysee James.

Employees like Tommy James, who normally starts picking up trash from 400 homes before daybreak.

"We apologize for the inconvenience," said Tommy James, Driver.

This afternoon those windshields were repaired. No other businesses in the industrial park were hit so he has no idea why his business was targeted.

"If someone has problems with us I wish we could have talked about it prior to this," said Tommy James.

Now, he's thinking about ramping up security.

They will double up their route this afternoon and expect to work until 7 p.m. finishing up the route.

The owner is offering a $500 reward for anyone who comes forward with information on who is responsible.
