Animals need heat protection, too

Posted: Updated:

This extreme heat is hard on everyone, even your pets.  Which is why Animal Control officials are reminding people to pay extra attention to their animals in this weather.

Animals must have a shady, sheltered place to rest and quantities of fresh water must be available at all times.

Excessive panting, staggering, and vomiting are some signs of heat stress in dogs.

"You have to be very very careful, if you dog is outside, or your cat, make sure there is plenty of fresh water, change it regularly, it is a good idea to get a kiddie swimming pool for the dogs to play in, just anything to make sure there is plenty of shade to make sure their temperature doesn't get too high," said Veterinarian Dr. Ivy Chupp.

And remember, it is a violation of city ordinance to leave any animal unattended in a vehicle when the conditions would constitute a health hazard to the animal.

Charges of inhumane treatment or cruelty to an animal could be filed.
