VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - During spring, summer, and winter breaks, most young people are living it up.
But a select few take it upon themselves to help others.
Just ask homeowner Wilhelmena Moore. "I am very appreciative. They are so sweet, so loving, so kind. I have really enjoyed them."
More than 150 high school students from states as far away as Alaska are in Valdosta this week for the 7th Annual Southern Hospitality Workcamp.
"Kids from all over the United States come in to paint houses, build wheelchair ramps, porches. And we sleep in the middle school, have programs, and basically serve the community," said Director Leesa Rawls.
The homeowners are selected by the city based on age, disability, and need.
"Many of these folks are alone and feeling kind of helpless, and by the time this week's over, the effect these campers have had on their lives is just immeasurable," said Rehab Construction Coordinator Richard Joyner.
By the end of this week, these students will have repaired 17 houses in the community.
"More teenagers should be willing to help people in need, even if it's not any religious background. I think more people should be willing to do this," said Student Volunteer Katie Bell.
Moore says finding young people who are so willing to help is a blessing. "You wouldn't find teenagers, a whole bunch of teenagers, that would give up their money to come to the states or wherever to help somebody else out."
Moore says while she is greatly appreciative for the repairs, she's just as appreciative for the fellowship.
The annual Workcamp supports the city's goal to eliminate substandard housing in the community by the year 2020.
