Water, Gas and Light says that the water is safe

Posted: Updated:

Some Albany Water, Gas and Light customers are worried about the quality of their water.  But WG&L officials insist they shouldn't be.

You'll get a water quality report in your bill this month.

Each year, the Environmental Protection Agency requires utilities to list contaminants in their water.  Some customers thought the numbers on the new report showed the amounts of lead and copper to be at the top end of the acceptable level.

But the actual acceptable level is much higher.  Water, Gas and Light officials say the water is perfectly safe and that the testing is done on a continuous basis.

Lori Farkas of Albany Water, Gas and Light said, "we monitor our wells constantly, we monitor our water and it's not a once a year thing where we're testing levels in our water, we're constantly testing our water."

Farkas says the testing is conducted at 30 homes in various parts of the city and that levels of lead and copper are right around where they have been in past years.
