Lee County says "no" to protest restrictions

Posted: Updated:
LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

Lee County Commissioners decided Tuesday night not to implement rules that would have restricted public demonstrations.

A horrible hate group threatened to protest this month's funeral of Marine Lance Corporal Steve Sutton. They didn't show up, but the sheriff's office asked county commissioners to consider amending an ordinance to require a permit and to limit hours and locations where public protests would be allowed.

Commissioners say there's already a state law that deals with disrupting a funeral, and they did not see the need to create an additional county ordinance that could have limited other forms of free speech.
