AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -
A well-known member of the South Georgia Civil Rights Movement, one of the "Stolen Girls" died Monday night in Americus.
Family members say 61-year old Sandra Mansfield died after a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was one of 30 young girls arrested during a July 1963 civil rights march in Americus.
They were taken to the Leesburg Stockade and held for 45 days.
Their families had no idea where they were.
Mansfield was just 12-years old at the time.
She shared her story with us several years ago.
"We were hoping to go home, but we were told we were going to be taken out one by one and killed. So every day we lived in fear also," said Sandra Mansfield, Stolen Girl.
The story of the Stolen Girls only got national attention 43-years after they were jailed.
Mansfield is survived by 3 daughters and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her funeral arrangements are pending.
