TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Three men hoping to replace a veteran south Georgia sheriff faced the voters Monday night.

The candidates for Tift County Sheriff attended a forum at the Woodman of the World Lodge.

Longtime Deputy Dennis Reese says he wants to focus on keeping kids away from violence and improve the drug squad. "I've been with the sheriff's office now for twenty-five years. I have dedicated my entire life to the sheriff's office and to the people of tift county," Reese said.

Current Coroner Steve Wood says he'll build on the stability of the office. He said, "Well, I'm ready to take office long-term. We've had three sheriffs in this county over the past sixty years, so we are accustomed to stability and longevity and that's what I plan to bring to it."

Former State Trooper Gene Scarborough says protecting the people, especially children and the elderly, will be his top priority. Scarborough said, "Our people, our older people need to be protected more so cause they paved the way for us, and we have to pave the way for our future by protecting our children so it's multi-faceted, but we need to do all of these things to make the people of tift county safe."

All three candidates are running in the Republican primary on July 31st to replace retiring Sheriff Gary Vowell. There is no Democratic candidate.
