APD teaches gun safety

Posted: Updated:

With more people arming themselves, the Albany Police Department helped citizens learn how to properly handle their weapon.

APD offers the Firearm Safety course three times a year to pass along potential lifesaving knowledge to gun owners.

Citizens took part in a morning safety course then heard about gun laws from District Attorney Greg Edwards before heading to shooting range.

"Education about having a weapon is very important so we would rather have a person, who has a weapon, educated on how to properly use it, when to use it, so those things are very important," says Phyllis Banks, Albany Police Media Manager.

The 8-hour course covered basic handgun safety, legal issues, and handling skills needed to deploy a handgun for self defense.

About 15 people attended.
