THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - During an emergency, thousands of the folks who help spread the word are volunteers.

More than 35,000 of those "amateur" radio operators will gather with their clubs or friends around the country Saturday for the annual field day.

While some clubs treat it as a contest, most use this time to practice their emergency response capabilities.

"For us in gives us a chance to check our antennas to be sure they're going to work like they're supposed to. It allows the EOC officials to be able to come in and actually see what we're doing and actually see where we're able to talk to. So we feel better, they feel better," said T'ville Radio Club President Mike Brown.

Brown says by the end of the event, they hope to have communicated with at least one group in all 50 states.
