How horses contract rabies

Posted: Updated:

Six people in Dalton are getting treatment after being exposed to a horse that had rabies. All of the people were in contact with the horse's saliva or mucus.

Horses with rabies can show symptoms of depression, having a paralyzed jaw, and even being choked.

One Albany veterinarian says an owner could confuse choking for a symptom of the disease, and accidentally contract rabies while caring for the animal.

He says it is not very common for horses to have rabies.

"It is somewhat more rare than the domestic animals as far as cats and all the wild animals as well. But they do get exposed to animals in the environment that carry rabies," said Dr. Karl Dockery with Dockery, Williams, Odom, and Deriso.

Most rabies infections are caused by raccoons. But, bats, skunks, and even foxes spread the disease too. Dr. Dockery says horses should get a rabies vaccination at least once a year, just like dogs.
