Library fines skyrocket

Posted: Updated:

Dougherty County Library users can expect an increase in fines starting next month. Those late fees will double. The fines will jump from 10¢ per day to 20¢ to help pay to replace books that are not returned.

The change starts July first for overdue and renewed books only. They're considering similar fees for audio books and magazines. Librarians say the best way to prevent paying fines is to provide your email address.

"If you're a regular email reader and give us your email address we can put it into our system,"  said Ashley Moore, Director of Dougherty County Public Library. "Or you can actually do it from the comfort of your home through our website and you will get notification before the item is due that you need to bring it back or renew it."

The Dougherty County Southside and Westtown branches will close on June 28th because of budget cuts. The hours of operation at the remaining branches will change starting in July.
